Webcam Not Working? Fix It in This Order

  1. 1

Allow camera access for this site

Click the lock or site-settings icon next to the address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload this page. If you blocked it once, the browser will not ask again until you change this setting.

  2. 2

    Pick the right camera

Laptops, external webcams, and virtual camera apps all appear as separate devices. Choose the one you plan to use in the Camera list after the preview starts.

  3. 3

Close apps that hold the camera

Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, OBS, or another browser tab can lock the camera. An "already in use" error usually means one of them is still open.

  4. 4

    Check system privacy settings

On macOS open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera. On Windows open Settings, Privacy & security, Camera. Make sure your browser is allowed.

  5. 5

    Check the hardware

Open any privacy shutter, try another USB port, and add light in front of you. A dark or grainy preview is often lighting, not a broken camera.

Webcam Test FAQ

Is this webcam test private?+

Yes. The preview runs inside this browser tab. VideoChat.im does not record, store, or upload your video, and the camera stops when you press Stop or leave the page.

Why is my webcam test black?+

A black preview usually means permission was denied, another app is using the camera, the wrong device is selected, or a privacy shutter is closed. Work through the steps on this page in order.

Why is the resolution lower than my camera supports?+

This test asks the browser for about 1280 by 720, and the browser and camera settle on what they can deliver. Video chat sites make their own choice, so treat this as a working check, not a maximum.

Can I test my webcam on a phone?+

Yes, in a mobile browser that supports camera access. Allow the camera when your browser asks, and use the Camera list to switch between front and back cameras where available.
