Microphone Not Working? Fix It in This Order

  1. 1

Allow microphone access for this site

Click the lock or site-settings icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, then reload this page. A blocked permission is the most common reason a mic test shows nothing.

  2. 2

    Pick the right input

Headsets, webcams, and laptops each add their own microphone. Choose the device you plan to use in the Microphone list after the meter starts.

  3. 3

Close apps that hold the microphone

Zoom, Teams, Discord, or another browser tab can keep the microphone busy. An "already in use" error usually means one of them is still open.

  4. 4

Check system privacy and input volume

On macOS open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone. On Windows open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone. Then check the input volume in your system sound settings.

  5. 5

    Check the hardware

Look for a mute switch on the headset or cable, reconnect it, or try another port. If the meter moves for one device but not another, the problem is that device.

Mic Test FAQ

Is this mic test private?+

Yes. The level meter is calculated inside this browser tab. VideoChat.im does not record, store, or upload any audio, and the microphone stops when you press Stop or leave the page.

Why does my mic test stay at 0%?+

The browser may be blocked, the wrong input may be selected, another app may hold the microphone, or a hardware mute is on. Work through the fixes on this page in order.

Why is my mic level always near 100%?+

Normal speech should move the meter without pinning it. If it stays near the top, lower the input volume in your system sound settings or move the microphone further away.

Can I test my microphone on a phone?+

Yes, in a mobile browser that supports microphone access. Allow the microphone when your browser asks, then speak and watch the meter move.
